Thinking About Starting Therapy? Here’s What to Expect in Your First Session

Your first session is often a little different from future sessions. It’s what we call an intake session — a structured conversation that helps your psychologist understand you, your background, and what brings you to therapy.

During this initial appointment, I’ll ask some questions to get to know you better. We might explore questions such as:

  • What’s been happening in your life recently?

  • Any past experiences that may be relevant?

  • What you're seeking support for?

  • What you’d like to get out of therapy — whether that’s feeling less anxious, improving relationships, setting boundaries, or something else...

There’s no need to have it all worked out — this session is a starting point, not a test. Many people find they feel a sense of relief just by putting things into words.

Future sessions often feel more fluid and conversational, as we begin working together on your goals at a pace that feels right for you.

At True Insight Psychology, my goal is to create a warm, collaborative space where you feel supported every step of the way. Therapy is grounded in evidence-based care tailored to your unique needs. If you’re thinking about starting therapy, remember it’s perfectly okay to take things one step at a time — and that very first step can be a powerful beginning.

If you have any questions or want to learn more about how therapy might support you, please don’t hesitate to reach out for a complimentary 10-minute phone consultation. I’m here to help you feel confident and comfortable about whether therapy is the right fit for you.
