FAQs

What is clinical psychology?

Clinical psychology involves the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health conditions and emotional difficulties. Clinical psychologists work with individuals to manage conditions such as anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, relationship difficulties, and more, using evidence-based therapeutic approaches.

How do I know if I need to see a clinical psychologist?

If you're experiencing emotional distress, feeling overwhelmed, or struggling with mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, or trauma, seeing a clinical psychologist could be beneficial. You may also seek therapy if you need help coping with life changes, relationship issues, or personal growth.

How long are appointments?

Sessions typically last 50 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes allocated for session administration.

How often do I need to come to therapy?

The frequency of sessions is flexible, starting weekly or fortnightly, and can taper off depending on the severity of the issue and your individual needs

Do I need a referral?

A referral is not required to see a psychologist. However, if you'd like to claim a Medicare rebate, you will need a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP).

How do I get a referral and a MHCP?

To get a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP), visit your GP or psychiatrist who will assess whether you are eligible for Better Access services. Mention when booking that the appointment is for an MHCP, as your doctor may need extra time for the consultation. Bring your Medicare card, referral and MHCP to your psychologist appointment.

What is the cost of an appointment?

Standard psychological appointments are $250 for a 50-minute session, scheduled between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM. Clients with a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP), will receive a rebate of $145.25 (gap of $104.75). This rebate is available to eligible patients who have a Mental Health Care Plan and a referral from a GP.

Can I claim with my private health insurance?

If you have private health insurance with extras cover, you may be able to claim a portion of the psychologist’s fee. However, please note that you cannot claim both a Medicare rebate and private health insurance benefits for the same individual appointment. We recommend contacting your health fund directly to confirm your level of coverage

What happens if I need to cancel my appointment?

We understand that sometimes things don't go to plan and you may need to reschedule or cancel your appointment. Please provide at least 24 hours’ notice to avoid a cancellation fee. This gives us the chance to offer your appointment to someone else on the waiting list. If less than 24 hours’ notice is given, the full appointment fee will apply.
